Alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) migrating upstream from the Atlantic Ocean congregate in Great Salt Bay at the head of the Damariscotta River before entering the Damariscotta Mills Fishladder in Damariscotta Mills, Maine, USA.  The fish ladder eases a 42 foot vertical ascent from Great Salt Bay to the Alewives' freshwater spawning grounds in Damariscotta Lake.
