Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) feeds in freshwater marsh along the Lake Erie shoreline in early May in Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Ohio, USA. North America's interior population of Trumpeters were virtually extirpated by hunting and habitat destruction, but thanks to a reintroduction program in 1996 by Ohio and other central states - and to their designation as endangered in states such as Ohio - Trumpeter Swans may now be seen thriving again in their traditional midwestern breeding grounds.
